Rockwool India & Middle East Group, a fully-owned subsidiary of Rockwool International A/S, Denmark, is upbeat on prospects in the insulation business and is considering further expansion of its manufacturing capacity in the country.

The stone wool made by the company is used in areas for thermal, fire and acoustic insulations in building and process industry.

The company had set up a manufacturing plant in Dahej, Gujarat, about three years ago to serve the local market.

“We are set to hit the full capacity of about 30,000 mt a year by next year and will have to add new capacity. The company will expand manufacturing to meet the future demand,” said Samson Suresh, Head-Corporate Affairs.

During the Power Plant Summit hosted by the CII and NTPC, he told Business Line that, “The company had invested about €30 million in setting up the Dahej plant. We may invest about the same amount for expansion. In the last three years, we had to double the capacity of one of the company product lines.”

The company’s insulation products help handle high temperatures ranging up to 750 degree Centigrade in pipes and other areas used in power plant, oil and gas, steel sectors.

The materials required for thermal insulation in commercial and housing sectors have now emerged as an important part of the insulation market in India.

With new buildings laying special focus on energy efficient systems to conform to Green norms, insulation products that help save energy have multiple applications. This is fuelling demand, he said.

Referring to older power plants in the country, he said many of them function at about 60 per cent efficiency. Therefore, the focus now has been on improving the performance of these plants by deploying superior quality insulation materials.

Samson Suresh said Rockwool Group is working with various State governments, regulatory bodies and Bureau of Energy Efficiency to improve the energy efficiency through thermal insulations. It has also launched awareness campaigns for energy efficiency in association with GIZ, a German Energy Efficiency Agency Partner to India’s Bureau of Energy Efficiency.
