Developing business in India has proved to be a Herculean task for Sunpreme, a solar power producer headquartered in California.
Several obstacles, including India's slow decision-making process, have forced the four-year-old company to set up a production line in China.
“We do not have a production line in India as yet. Unfortunately, it takes a long time to develop business in India, with obstacles to federal and State incentives and working capital,” said Surinder Bedi, Executive Vice-President, Sunpreme Inc.
India continues to be an important business segment for the company, since “solar photovoltaic (PV) energy is badly needed here with huge electricity bills and frequent power shortages, Bedi told Business Line .
“Adding renewable energy in India typically makes better economics, and renewable power can help industries run their businesses cost-efficiently.”
Last year, the company commissioned a 150 Kw rooftop solar system at the Guru Nanak Dev Super Speciality Hospital in Punjab, to generate 225,000 Kw hours of electricity annually.
The system is the largest commercial rooftop installation in Punjab, and the first rooftop in India to use Sunpreme's innovative thin film technology at the 350-bedded hospital.
Ashok Sinha, Founder and CEO of Sunpreme, said the company aims to meet Indian companies’ critical energy needs.
