EID Parry’s sugar mill at Pugalur in Tamil Nadu has received the Bonsucro certification for sustainable sugarcane cultivation and milling practices.
Bonsucro is a global non-profit organisation that fosters sustainability in the sugarcane sector.
V Ramesh, Managing Director, EID Parry, told media persons the company has over the years focussed on sustainable sugarcane cultivation from the farm level including water use efficiency, encouraging use of biofertilisers and biopesticides to enhance yields.
The Murugappa group company has worked with thousands of farmers through concerted extension efforts. It has set a target of increasing sugarcane yield by about 10 per cent more than Tamil Nadu’s average yield over the next two years. As of now, sugarcane production is about 36 tonnes an acre at Pugalur.
Sugarcane sustainability focuses on soil, water and fertiliser management.
The certification is the first of its kind in Asia for an organisation working with small farmers, he said. A press release quoting A Vellayan, Chairman, EID Parry, said that the certification is recognition of world class manufacturing in India.
The sugar industry is an engine of employment generation in rural areas and enhancing productivity and making farms future-ready will have a huge beneficial impact.
EID Parry is among the largest manufacturers of sugar with nine sugar factories across South India with a daily sugarcane crushing capacity of about 37,550 tonnes, 153 MW cogeneration and 230 kilolitres of distillery capacity.
