If there is something that excites Nvidia’s co-founder, president and CEO Jen-Hsun Huang about today’s India, it is the application of ‘Make in India’ concept to companies.

“I know ‘Make in India’ means manufacturing in India, but there is another ‘Make in India’ that I think is equally exciting which is start-ups. I am super-excited about the companies that are being created here. The environment is perfect for these young people to have the confidence now and the culture is ready to let them start a company,” he believes.

“When I first came to India around 11 years ago, in fact, we were a small company. When our employees joined us, their parents wanted to meet me…asking what do you do, why are you here? And I was interviewed by the parents. Sometimes I did well sometimes I didn’t. I tried my best every time,” Huang laughs. Parents then wanted their children to work with globally established companies like Infosys or IBM or Cisco. “That was the definition of success; this time, none of those companies were mentioned, it is all the start-ups,” he says, adding that the eco-system was ready as parents were accepting and encouraging their children to set-up companies.

Elaborating on Nvidia role in the field of driver-less cars, Huang said, “Auto is one of the fastest growing segments for us. We are working with practically all auto OEMs in the world on autonomous driving technology.”

Bets on driverles cars

He believes that by 2020 several countries will have driver-less shuttles in place.

Also that in just two years, there would be many cars with driver assisted capability that could help drivers pilot a car.

“The WEpod that is equipped with many Nvidia processors was launched in Netherlands two weeks ago. All you have to do is pull out your phone and say you want a drive and WEpod navigates through the city and finds you.

“By the 2020 Olympics Japan expects to have driverless shuttles, and Singapore will start pretty soon,” he says.

Earlier, Huang inaugurated Nvidia’s new and expanded development centre in Pune, which is the largest outside of its headquarters in Santa Clara.

The $5 billion in revenues American company has three development centres in India accounting for 22-25 per cent of its total manpower.
