In a day of recalls, Renault India and its global partner Nissan have recalled units of their respective small cars, the Kwid and the Datsun redi-GO.

Both carmakers have cited faulty fuel systems for the recall.

In a deviation from the norm — a recall is usually announced through a press statement for wider dissemination — Renault India chose to notify it through an incognito release on its website earlier this week. Over 50,000 units of the car have been recalled.

“In line with our high standards of product quality, Renault India is conducting a pre-emptive and voluntary inspection of select 0.8 L variants of Renault Kwid that were produced up to May 18, 2016,” the company said in the statement.

As a proactive measure, a fuel hose clip will be added to the cars, and the overall functionality of the fuel system will be evaluated to mitigate any potential disruption of fuel supply.

“We will inspect these cars without any cost to the customers and carry out necessary measures, if required. We are in the process of contacting customers, requesting them to come to dealerships to get their cars inspected,” it said.

Launched in September last year, the Kwid has been a success for Renault in India. In August, the French carmaker unveiled a 1,000cc engine variant of the car. The 800CC variant is price between ₹2.64 and ₹3.73 lakh. The car competes with Maruti Suzuki’s Alto, the best-selling car in the segment.

According to the latest report of the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers, Renault India has sold 56,028 units of the Kwid between April and September this year.

Meanwhile, Nissan India, which manufactures the Datsun redi-GO at the same CMFA platform of Kwid, said it is recalling 932 units of the vehicle because of similar faulty fuel system.

“Datsun is conducting a voluntary recall campaign on certain India-manufactured Datsun redi-GO vehicles to inspect the fuel hose and fix a clip at no cost to the customer,” the company said.

The redi-GO was launched on June 7 and has sold over 14,000 units till now.

Renault-Nissan has an alliance and both Kwid and redi-GO are manufactured at the same facility in Chennai.
