G Gopalakrishna has taken charge as Director, Centre for Advanced Financial Research and Learning (CAFRAL).

He took up this position after taking voluntary retirement as Executive Director of Reserve Bank of India on April 20. Usha Thorat, former RBI Deputy Governor, was the Director of CAFRAL since inception in 2011.

Non-profit body CAFRAL is a not-for-profit, independent body fully funded by the RBI.

The Centre is engaged in conducting seminars, conferences and other learning programmes for central banks, regulators, senior management in the financial sector, industry and government on matters related to banking and finance.

It undertakes research in areas of interest to the financial sector.

With Gopalakrishna moving to CAFRAL, the RBI now has three ED level vacancies. Two ED vacancies arose earlier due to the superannuation of S Karuppasamy (in January) and elevation of R Gandhi as Deputy Governor (earlier this month).
