The Genpact team from Delhi won the Business Line Cerebration Quiz in Mumbai today.

Fighting off the challenge from seven other regional winners, Genpact’s team of Rohan Khanna and Leo Thomas coasted to a relatively easy win. The regional rounds were held in eight cities (Chennai, Coimbatore, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Bangalore, Delhi, Ahmedabad and Mumbai).

Notching up an early lead, by the third round, the Genpact team held on while the Chennai Silks team (Arul Saravana and Yogesh Pai), which had surged ahead initially, fell behind earning some negative points in the penultimate round of the six-round final and ended up the second runner-up. The IBM team comprising Rohit Jain and Parin was the first runner-up.

Quiz master Lloyd Saldana conducted the six rounds in the same format as in the regional rounds — Roots and Shoots (oral round), Windows (visual round), Briefly, New Manager, Perspective and Brandline.

Saldana said that he had provided a mix of tough and easy questions by widening the scope of the quiz to include matters of general interest too. A few questions left even the teams with furrowed brows and no one willing to risk a guess as a wrong answer meant negative marks.

Mostly, the teams were lightning quick on the buzzer, giving the answer even before the quiz master could complete the question, drawing applause from the audience.

When the quiz master mentioned the word Ostiarius (a Roman reference to a slave) and asked for its modern equivalent, Chennai Silks was quick to hit the buzzer and answer “Bouncer”. And, even as Saldana began, “…a French grand prix driver in the 1930s…,” came the answer that the car being referred to was Bugatti Veyron.

Complimenting the quality of the participants, Saldana said the format had enabled many new faces to emerge. “As a quiz master, that is good to see,” he said.

Union Bank of India was the title sponsor. K Subramanyam, Executive Director, Union Bank of India, gave away the prizes.

The champions picked up cheques worth ₹50,000 each, while the first runner-up team picked up ₹35,000 each, and the second runner-up ₹25,000 each.

The gift sponsors included the Steel Authority of India, Lawrence and Mayo, Vimal, ProFX, and Big FM 92.7.
