Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India Pvt Ltd (HMSI) has announced that its combined annual production capacity will reach 6.4 million units before the end of 2016.

The 100 per cent subsidiary of Honda Motor Company, Japan, plans to invest Rs 585 crore to expand the annual production capacity at its third two-wheeler production plant at Narsapura near Bengaluru. The plant started operations in June 2013 with an annual production capacity of 1.8 million units.

Honda 2W will use the investment to build a new production line in the existing plant and add 600,000 units to increase the total annual production capacity here to 2.4 million units before the end of 2016.

Combined with the additional capacity of 1.2 million units at the upcoming fourth plant in Gujarat scheduled to go on stream in the first half of 2016, the expansion will increase HMSI’s overall annual production capacity to 6.4 million units.

“Honda is strengthening its ‘Make in India’ resolve through steady and strategic investments with the long-term objective of creating 39 per cent additional capacity within 3.5 years. We are planning to increase the number of associates in the plant by approximately 1,900. This investment will provide new opportunities for expansion of brand Honda in the largest two-wheeler market of the world,” Keita Muramatsu, President & CEO – HMSI said in a statement.
