Hyundai Motor India has showcased the Creta, a sport utility vehicle, to be launched next month in the domestic market.

The six-speed Creta will occupy the fast growing, medium range sub-segment in SUVs giving the Korean car manufacturer entry into a large volume market.

Addressing media persons at a preview organised at the company’s car factory near Chennai, Bo Shin Seo, Managing Director and CEO, Hyundai Motor, said the Creta is developed on an entirely new platform. It will target the domestic and export markets. The Creta is designed on Hyundai’s concept of the Fluidic Sculpture 2.0 providing high-end aesthetics, durability and safety features.

Rakesh Srivastava, Senior Vice-President and Division Head, Marketing and Sales Division, said the Creta fulfils Hyundai’s range of SUV offering. It now has the sport-like Active i20 and the luxury Santa Fe.

The Creta fills the large-volume middle segment. It is a full fledged SUV with the fluidic styling genes of the premium Elite i20 and luxury sedans.

While the domestic passenger car segment estimated at 2.26 lakh units a month is growing at about 7 per cent, the SUVs and sedans are growing at about 20-24 per cent. Hyundai will now tap into this segment with a competitive offering, he said.

It has consolidated its position in compact cars which account for nearly half the passenger car market and the sedans. It will replicate this success with the Creta, Srivastava said.

The Creta comes in a wide range of variants including a petrol version with a 1.6-Dual VTVT engine and diesel versions with U2 1.4 CRDi and 1.6 CRDi VGT engines. Buyers also have a choice of manual and automatic transmission (1.6 CRDi VGT).

It has many first in class features with side and curtain airbags, reverse parking camera, 17-inch diamond cut alloy wheels.
