Mahindra and Mahindra’s joint venture partnership, Mahindra Telephonics Integrated Systems, has opened the first private sector aerospace and electronics joint venture manufacturing facility in Prithla, Faridabad.

The joint venture (JV) partnership is between Mahindra and Mahindra and Telephonics Corporation, a developer and manufacturer of high technology integrated communication and sensor system solutions for military and commercial markets, and a subsidiary of the Griffon Corporation.

The facility, located in Prithla, a 45 minute drive from Delhi, officially opened on Wednesday. The business will focus on the development and manufacture of leading edge radar technology. Initial production of the first proprietary products commenced at the facility in December 2013, the company said in a statement.

Telephonics’ long-standing OEM customer base has shown keen interest in partnering with Mahindra Telephonics on the development and execution of offset programmes in India.

Telephonics President and CEO Joseph Battaglia said, “Our joint venture has also begun planning for additional development facilities, including a larger manufacturing facility and the development of an outdoor radar and antenna test range.”

SP Shukla, president and member of the Group Executive Board, Mahindra & Mahindra, noted that the opening of the Prithla facility is a critical step in transitioning American defence manufacturing capabilities to India.

“Being able to support the Ministry of Defence requirements locally in India provides a multitude of benefits, including cost efficiencies, decreased turnaround time and enhanced logistical support,” he said.

He added that the Mahindra Defence Systems would now have a three dimensional capability encompassing land, sea and air domains. Synergies between the different defence and Mahindra group companies would also be exploited.
