Most carmakers reported growth in July sales, thanks to new launches and continued demand for the models rolled out earlier this year.
While market leader Maruti Suzuki India sold 90,093 units in July (75,145 units in July 2013), second-ranked Hyundai Motor India sold 29,260 units during the month (25,260 units a year ago).
“The demand pull created by successful product launches and strong channel spread has brought down discounts and the greenshoots of growth are visible with the stabilisation of macroeconomic factors and a near-to-average monsoon,” said Rakesh Srivastava, Senior Vice-President, Sales and Marketing, Maruti.
Honda Cars India also recorded good numbers last month with the launch of multi-utility vehicle Mobilio (3,365 units) and continued demand for the new Honda City.
“The Mobilio has over 10,000 bookings since its launch and we are confident that it will attract more customers,” said Jnaneswar Sen, Senior Vice-President, Marketing & Sales.
Toyota Kirloskar Motor sold 11,921 units in July, up 4 per cent in comparison with the 11,515 units sold last year.
Ford India and General Motors India, however, saw sales dip. While Ford sold 7,592 units, marginally less than the 7,867 vehicles it sold in the year-ago month, GM India saw a 27 per cent descent in sales to 4,726 units from 6,503 in July 2013.
Festival hopesThese companies hope to do better in the coming months with the festival season round the corner.
“We have improved supplies to expedite deliveries for all our models to meet the expected rise in demand,” said Vinay Piparsania, Executive Director of Marketing, Sales and Service, Ford India. Sales of Tata Motors and Mahindra & Mahindra also declined during the month.
Commercial vehicles’ sales continued to decline, including those of Tata Motors, M&M and Volvo Eicher.
Two-wheeler companies continue to see growing sales, with market leader Hero MotoCorp selling over five lakh units in July, followed by Honda Motorcycle and Yamaha Motor. Sales of M&M’s two-wheelers, however, fell 16 per cent to 12,472 units.
