Tatas, Mahindra & Mahindra, Anil Ambani’s Reliance Group and Baba Kalyani’s Bharat Forge are amongst those in the fray for the $1.5-billion naval helicopter contract. The contract is for supply of 100 helicopters.

The companies have responded to a request for intent (RFI) to participate in the Naval Utility Helicopters Programme. The last date for submission of RFIs was February 17. This will also put to test, the Government’s Make in India policy. The challenge before the Indian Navy would be to ensure that the original equipment manufacturers have clearly followed the defence procurement norms of the Government.

Sources said Reliance Group will be bidding with its Airbus platform while Bharat Forge will tie up with Augusta Westland. Bell Helicopters will tie up with Textron India while public sector unit HAL has submitted an offer for the Kamov 226 helicopter, along with the Russians.

Presentations began on March 16 with the first being given by Bell Helicopters.
