The Rs 2,000 crore, Mumbai headquartered Nilkamal Group which forayed into the mattress market in India two years ago is planning to invest Rs 60 crore to set up additional factories to manufacture mattresses over the next three years.

The company’s mattress division already has two manufacturing units at Hosur near Bangalore and at Dankuni in Kolkata, set up at an investment of Rs 27 crore which together generate 1,80,000 units per annum.

“We will be investing in setting up three additional factories which will push up the production capacity to 4,50,000 units per annum. The factories will be located in the West, North, and Central India where we hold large parcels of land.

The production output from these new factories will cater to those respective markets, where we currently do not have a significant presence. We will import the best equipment from the US, Italy and Switzerland, similar to ones we have in our existing factories”, said Hiten V Parekh, Executive Director, Nilkamal Ltd.

In the city to launch two new mattresses – the side sleeper mattress called Monarch and the Series EX Valentine mattress, Parekh pointed out that a survey conducted in the country revealed that 52 per cent of people sleep on their sides, causing shoulder pain and numbness in their fingers in the morning. Side Sleeper Monarch is meant for such people.

“Priced at Rs 30,000, this orthopaedic mattress offers three types of comfort along the length of the mattress, distributing the pressure points more evenly, therefore eliminating pain. We have also launched the Valentine, a mattress that bounces to your rhythm to heighten the pleasuring during lovemaking while providing spine support. It is targeted at adults in the age group of 21-42 and is priced at Rs 40,000”, he said.

The Rs 5,000 crore Indian mattress market of which the organized market constitutes Rs 2,500 crore is growing at 12-15% per annum.

Nilkamal will leverage its pipeline of 18,000 retailers who are selling its moulded furniture across the country, to sell its mattresses.

The mattresses are available online on Pepperfry.com and Snapdeal.com and in the company’s 19 @Home stores in the South and Western regions of India and with its dealers.
