Cuisine awareness A bunch of local online start-ups are now offering packaged ingredient boxes for do-it-yourself gourmet recipes at the consumer’s door step. These firms believe there is a huge potential, with the growing aspirations and awareness about cuisines, thanks to the increasing number of cookery shows on TV.

One such start-up is CookGourmet.co . Consumers can choose and order a gourmet recipe box consisting of all ingredients needed which are measured, chopped and prepped with easy-to-follow instruction cards. The box is delivered at your doorstep within two hours. The menu is refreshed every week on the website.

Sanny Chaudhary, co-Founder, Cook Gourmet, said the start-up’s USP is offering premium recipes and ingredients not easily found at neighbourhood high-end eateries and ensuring that the recipes can be prepared within 30 minutes.

Consumer-friendly “We also ensure that these recipes do not require any specialised kitchen equipment — even something such as an oven or a microwave. Even if a recipe requires special equipment, we adapt these recipes and do a fair bit of re-engineering at our food lab, so they can be simply cooked by the consumers,” he said.

The company, which launched its service in January, currently delivers in Delhi, Gurgaon and Noida and believes that it can take gourmet food to the masses by keeping its pricing competitive and reaching out to satellite towns.

Daman Singh Kohli, co-founder, Cook Gourmet, added: “We believe there is even bigger potential in smaller towns and cities as there is high disposable income, growing aspirations to try out new cuisines but little access to ingredients.”

Fund-raising plans The company is looking to raise funds and plans to expand to Mumbai and Bengaluru as well. It plans to launch a pilot in satellite cities such as Chandigarh and Jaipur in the next few months.

The ready-to-cook recipe box space may be niche but has already seen the emergence of several such online start-ups such as Cookfresh.in and Gourmet BnC , among others. Though models differ, while some ask consumers to book much in advance, others offer a limited number of recipe kits instead of offering new recipes every week.

But most of them currently deliver these recipe boxes in limited regions. Other players such as Chef’s Basket are selling recipe kits through other e-commerce sites besides having a presence across some offline gourmet food stores in Mumbai.

Anand Shenoy, Founder, Gourmet BnC, said: “The space is still niche and the business models are evolving to attain faster scale-up. We, for instance, have also started tapping new segments such as offering nutritious food recipe kits for kids.

“We are targeting mothers, for whom it is challenging to pack nutritious food in children’s lunch boxes.”
