The Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (Visakhapatnam steel plant) on Tuesday launched a new project to generate 120 MW of power with 100 per cent blast furnace gas and coke oven gas, the first of its kind in Indian steel industry, according to a press release.

P Madhusudan, the CMD, lighted up the boiler no.1, signalling the commissioning of the pollution-free captive power plant, built at a cost of Rs 676 crore.

On the occasion, he said that “it is a step towards achieving self- sufficiency in power generation and to reduce dependence on the state grid” in the process of steel making. He complimented the employees of RINL and the associates involved in the success of the project.

P.C Mohapatra, the Director (Projects), and D.N Rao, the Director (Operations), said 2015-16 would be a significant year for the RINL as the new units in the expansion would stabilise and production would be enhanced.

The average power requirement of VSP at 6.3 MTPA stage will be 418 MW. The RINL is currently having 3 turbo generators of  60 MW each (180 MW) capacity and 2 turbo generators of 67.5 each (135 MW),  taking the total captive power generation capacity to 315 MW.

To efficiently utilize the surplus blast furnace gas (BFG), the state-of-the-art technology has been used. The new plant will make RINL's power situation more comfortable, added the release.
