The Joint Action Council of trade unions at Neyveli Lignite Corporation has called for a strike protesting the death of a worker allegedly shot by a Central Industrial Security Force guard.
Over a dozen unions representing about 25,000 permanent and contract workers at the mining and power generation public sector enterprise, decided to strike work from 10 p.m. on Monday.
Trade unions, including the All India Trade Union Congress and the CITU, have announced State-wide demonstrations protesting the death of the NLC worker.
An AITUC press release said the victim, 35-year-old M Raja, a contract worker and member of the AITUC, had been shot by a CISF guard at the entrance to the second mine at Neyveli following an altercation between the two.
Details not knownAITUC TN State Council General Secretary TM Murthi said the AITUC represents over 80 per cent of the 12,500 contract workers. The details of the incident are yet to emerge. Further course of action will be decided on Tuesday. The Council representing permanent workers at NLC has also supported the protest.
V Thilagar, General Secretary, Pattali Thozil Sangam, and a part of the JAC, said the Council has called for a one-day strike immediately.
The three mines at NLC supply over 23 million tonnes of lignite annually and produces over 2,500 MW from three thermal power stations in Tamil Nadu.
