Tata Power Renewable Energy Ltd, a subsidiary of Tata Power Company Limited, has inked a Power Purchase Agreement for a 100 MW solar project at Anantapuram solar park in Andhra Pradesh with the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI).

The Commercial Operations Date of the project as per the PPA has been fixed as October 16, 2017. The project has been secured through bidding in the Open category under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission (JNNSM). With a challenging date of commissioning of less than a year, Tata Power has to be implemented in a record time.

Rahul Shah, CEO and Executive Director, Tata Power Renewable Energy Ltd, said in a statement, “This project win fortifies our leadership in renewable energy generation in India. The solar project at Anantapuram will add 100 MW of clean energy increasing our green footprint. This move is in line with the government’s set target of 100 GW from solar energy by 2017. In the next 5 years, the company plans to significantly add to its solar generation capacity.”

The JNNSM is a major initiative that aims to create favourable policy conditions for its diffusion across the country. JNNSM had initially set a target to 20 GW of solar installations by 2022 that was reset to achieve five times more at 100 GW by 2022.

TPERL has operating capacity of 1319 MW, comprising 426 MW wind and 893 MW solar. The company is also in the process of implementing nearly 500 MW of renewable power projects at various locations.

The company is seeking to grow its renewable portfolio in India and in select international markets through organic and inorganic opportunities. With the acquisition of Welspun Renewable Energy, and its project pipeline, TPREL’s portfolio has grown to about 2,400 MW, making it the largest renewable energy company in India.
