Thermal Powertech Corporation India Ltd has synchronised the second 660 mega watt (MW) unit of its 1320 MW thermal power plant with the grid.

The coal-fired power plant located in Krishnapatnam in Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh has signed a power purchase agreement with Andhra Pradesh Power Distribution Companies for the supply of 500 MW to the Central, Eastern, Southern and Northern Power Distribution Companies for 25 years.

The plant’s first unit of 660 MW, which was synchronised in December 2014, started commercial operations in February 2015. With the synchronisation of its second unit, TPCIL is on course to commence commercial operations of its total 1,320 MW operating capacity by the end of September 2015.

TPCIL is the joint venture company between Gayatri Energy Ventures Pvt Ltd (GEVPL), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Gayatri Projects Ltd and Singapore-based SembCorp Utilities, a wholly-owned subsidiary of SembCorp Industries.

It has fuel supply agreements with Mahanadi Coal Fields and Indonesia-based PT Bayan Resources for the supply of coal for its super-critical coal-fired power plant.

T.V. Sandeep Reddy, Managing Director of Gayatri Projects Ltd., in a statement said, “It is an important development as it reflects our capabilities and commitment to executing projects in a timely manner. We are now focused towards achieving full completion of the unit.”

Atul Nargund, CEO, Thermal Powertech Corporation India, said, “The synchronisation of our second unit is a significant milestone and brings us another step closer to the full completion of our power plant, which is expected to be in Q3 2015. With this, the plant will be fully operational with a gross generation capacity of 1,320 MW.”

Incorporated in 1998, Sembcorp Industries is a leading energy, water and marine group operating across six continents worldwide. It has gross power capacity of over 8,200 MW. In India, Sembcorp has 3,340 megawatts of power capacity -- 2,640 MW in thermal energy and 700 MW in renewable energy. It owns and operates two supercritical thermal power plants, Thermal Powertech Corporation India (TPCIL) and NCC Power Projects (NCCPP), each having a capacity of 1,320 MW, in Andhra Pradesh.
