TVS Motor expects to boost the sales and market share of the Jupiter through expanded offerings, even as the scooter market in semi-urban and rural areas expands rapidly.

TVS Jupiter, which has emerged as the second largest selling scooter brand in India after Honda Activa, has just clocked total sales of two million units since its launch in September 2013.

Also, Jupiter has consistently been among the top 10 two-wheelers sold in India.

“The first million came in about 30 months. But the second million was achieved in about 18 months. The second million sales is a landmark achievement,” Aniruddha Haldar, Vice-President (Marketing), Commuter Motorcycles, Scooters and Corporate Brand, TVS Motor Company, told BusinessLine .

Rural markets

Expanded offerings under the Jupiter brand and a strong network in small towns and rural areas are expected to support the growth.

TVS Jupiter is available in the base variant as well as ZX and ZX with Disc Brake. It recently introduced a ‘Classic’ edition, which has incorporated several new features.

“We expect the Classic variant to spur our scooter sales in the festival season and going forward. Also, the wide Jupiter portfolio will appeal to all segments of emerging scooter buyers,” said Haldar.

The share of scooters in two-wheeler sales is about 35 per cent now, up from 31-32 per cent a year-ago.

Analysts project that the share will continue to rise in the coming years.

What works for automatic scooters now is that the technology has evolved, and the mileage difference against four-stroke bikes has narrowed down.

Thus, apart from convenience and comfort, features such as fuel efficiency are adding to the attractiveness of scooters.
