The tyre industry has called upon the Government to impose anti-dumping measures in the wake of an increase in radial tyre imports.

The Automotive Tyre Manufacturers Association (ATMA) said import of Passenger Car Radials (PCR) has gone up by 20 per cent while Truck & Bus radial (TBR) tyres surged by 57 per cent in the first two months of the current financial year.

It is pointed out that 2.8 lakh units of TBR tyres have landed in India in the current fiscal over 1.8 lakh TBR tyres that were imported in the corresponding months of FY16. In May alone, import of TBRs reached 1.5 lakh units, which is almost 40 per cent of the replacement demand of TBR tyres in India per month.

As the truck and bus tyre segment is the single largest category accounting for over 55 per cent of industry turnover, the dumping of imports is having a serious and adverse impact on the domestic industry.

In a communication to the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, ATMA has asked for quickening the process of imposing anti-dumping duty on import of TBR tyresfrom China.

KM Mammen, Chairman, ATMA, said the Indian tyre industry continues to be at the receiving end of indiscriminate import of radial tyres. There has been no let up in dumping of tyres from China. Such indiscriminate import and dumping is hurting capacity utilisation levels in the industry, which have come down significantly over the last two years.
