Vivanta By Taj, the upscale brand from the Indian Hotels Company Ltd, has entered South-East Asia with an island resort in Langkawi, Malaysia.

The 35-acre property has come up on the privately owned 390-acre Rebak Island. Vivanta By Taj - Rebak Island is located on one of the 99 isles that make up the Langkawi Island.

“We are looking at this region as we want to expand the brand internationally. We are also in talks for a property in Thailand,” said Veer Vijay Singh, COO, Vivanta By Taj.

Vivanta currently has 29 properties, of which 26 are in India and three are abroad — Malaysia, Maldives and Sri Lanka.

While India is still the biggest market for the brand, Singh sees Africa emerging as the second biggest. “We are looking at opportunities in Africa. The Taj group already has a property in Zambia — Taj Pamodzi. We will slowly be making it into a Vivanta. We will have one more hotel in Africa, for which we are looking at South Africa, Zanzibar, Kenya, etc.”

On expansion, Singh said: “Vivanta should reach the 50-hotel mark by 2020. Out of the 50, around 40 properties will be in India.”
