German automaker Volkswagen has said it has achieved 21.8 per cent reduction in specific waste generation and 17.4 per cent lower specific water consumption per car at its plant in Chakan last year.
The results are part of the group’s ‘Think Blue. Factory’ initiative that aims at reducing the impact on environment due to manufacturing processes by 25 per cent a car globally.
At Pune, the waste generation in 2013 stood at 6.57 kg/car against 8.4 kg/car in 2012, mainly on recycling of paint sludge, while fresh water consumption during production was 4.46 cu m and 5.4 cu m, respectively.
Mahesh Kodumudi, President and Managing Director, Volkswagen India, said: “We have made ‘Think Blue. Factory’ a part of our day-to-day working.”
VW's Pune plant is one of the 27 production facilities worldwide which follow the initiative.
