Women have created history of sorts at the Novartis Biotechnology Leadership Camp (BioCamp) held in Hyderabad earlier this week.
Having taken the top three spots at the local BioCamp, it will be three women students who will represent India at the Novartis Biotechnology Leadership Camp in Basel, Switzerland, next month.
Satarupa Barma and Aditi Ramnath from the Indian School of Business (ISB), Hyderabad, and Nidhi Hans, who is pursuing a PhD at the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB), took top honours at the local event.
BioCamp has been held annually in Asian countries since 2004, starting in Taiwan as a local event. It has since grown to a global event. Around 60 students from around the world are expected to participate in the global BioCamp being held at the Novartis Campus in Basle, Switzerland from August 24 to 27.
Participation
Students go through a rigorous judging process before they are selected to participate in the country’s BioCamps. This time, 53 students from diverse faculties, including pharmacology, biotechnology, life sciences, finance, biomedical engineering, genetics, business management and immunology participated at the India event.
Institutes that participated included the Indian Institutes of Technology, Bombay and Kharagpur; the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta; the Fr Muller Medical College, Mangalore; NMIMS Bangalore; the Institute of Chemical Technology, Mumbai; BITS – Pilani; the Indian School of Business, Hyderabad and Mohali; Manipal University; Christian Medical College, Vellore; and JIPMER Puducherry, among others, Novartis said.
Speaking on the occasion, Ranjit Shahani, Novartis India’s Vice-Chairman and Managing Director, said the BioCamp maintains its position as a platform to provide students the opportunity to interact with leaders in the pharmaceutical area outside their area of study. “We hope to engage with a wider group of students as we grow the programme,” he added.
Others who participated in the function included Prof K Srinath Reddy, President, Public Health Foundation of India, who spoke on public health challenges in India and what needed to be learnt from other parts of the world; Vishy Chebrol, co-founder, India Life Science Funds, who focused on how entrepreneurs need to pitch for funding; and Dr Prabuddha Ganguli, Chief Executive Vision IPR, who focused on the value of intellectual property rights. Also participating in the event were Anu Acharya, Chief Executive, mapmygenome.com, who shared her entrepreneurial experience in preparing a business plan, and Juergen Brokatzky-Geiger, Novartis’ Global Head Corporate Responsibility.
