Employees of TTK Protective Devices Ltd have launched a protest against the company's move to shut down its manufacturing facility in Chennai.

The TTK Group company manufactures condoms under the Skore brand.

It has two manufacturing facilities in Tamil Nadu, in Chennai and Virudhunagar, and one in Puducherry.

According to V. Purushothaman, General Secretary of the workers’ union, the company has decided to close down its Pallavaram facility, and had stopped production at the unit. It had offered VRS (voluntary retirement scheme) to 182 employees two months ago. Though 32 employees accepted the offer and retired, the remaining 150 employees did not want to accept the offer. But they had not been paid salary for the last two months. The 150 employees today gathered at its corporate office in the city and at the factory demanding salary and resumption of production at the unit.

Purushothaman said the company’s other two units at Virudhunagar and Puducherry were functioning as usual.

When contacted, Rajagopalan Saranyan, Director of the company, declined to comment on the development. “I am sorry to say that I don’t want to comment on this issue,” he said.

The subsidiary of TTK was earlier in a joint venture with Reckit Benckiser under the name TTK-LIG, manufacturing Durex and Kohinoor brand condoms. After parting ways with its partner, TTK Group has launched its own condom brand — Skore — and the company was renamed TTK Protective Devices.

Last year, the group announced the amalgamation of TTK Protective Devices with TTK Healthcare Ltd.
