The Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) has developed a mobile app -- Fish Finder Version 1 -- to identify commercial reef and reef associated fishes.

The app is user-friendly and can be easily loaded on all smartphones. It has an easy search portal with common names, and is useful for both the public as well as researchers and students to easily identify fish. As many as 369 fishes from 66 families can be identified using the app, said Rekha J Nair, Principal Scientist of the Demersal Fisheries Division of CMFRI, who developed the app.

The app can be used to identify fish and classify them scientifically using their common names. Researchers would be able to accurately identify species as far as possible on the field. Snorkellers and those interested in marine life would be able to identify live fish. Traders in the field as well as exporters would also be able to identify fish easily.

The app can be downloaded from the CMFRI website www.cmfri.org.in and does not require Internet connectivity for use. Hence, it can even be used in remote corners where Net connectivity is not available.
