South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) and the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) have signed an agreement here on Wednesday. SAARC’s Agriculture Centre (SAC) and ICRISAT would work on building a network to accelerate the use of technologies in agriculture in the eight South Asian countries.

“ICRISAT and SAC will look for opportunities to carry out joint research in areas of mutual interest by sharing existing resources .This will contribute to the medium-term food and nutritional security in the region,” ICRISAT Director General David Bergvinson said here in a statement on Wednesday after signing the agreement.

The poor people of these areas are also the most vulnerable to climate change and variability. These areas are typified by low productivity and inadequate capacity for coping with risk due to climate adversities, poor soil conditions, and a lack of farming skills, knowledge and poor management practices.

The research would focus on developing technologies that can improve production and increase sustained productivity in stress prone areas. “This will help smallholder farmers to adopt these new and improved technologies to increase food production and raise their incomes in areas of limited water,” he said
