As expected, the existing low-pressure area over central parts of north Madhya Pradesh has intensified, promising to drive the monsoon activity over Central India and increasingly so over North-West India.

In fact, the rain activity will scale up further as a western disturbance is approaching North-West India from the opposite direction, setting up the stage for interaction of the two weather systems.

Interactive rain

A monsoon ‘low’ interacting with a western disturbance has always been associated with sustained heavy to very rainfall, and this is exactly what the India Met Department (IMD) has forecast for Friday and Saturday.

The western disturbance was located to over East Afghanistan and neighbourhood. From this location, the north-westerly winds blowing across Pakistan dip into the North Arabian Sea and mop up moisture as they fan into North-West India.

The interaction of the moisture-laden systems churns up the atmosphere over North-West India, forcing the moisture to lift high into the atmosphere where it cools to precipitate as rain.

The Met subdivisions of West Madhya Pradesh, West Uttar Pradesh, Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi, East Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand – some of them nursing a rain deficit – would also make gains from this spell.

Extreme heavy rain

Widespread rainfall with heavy to very heavy falls at a few places and extremely heavy falls at isolated places has been forecast for West Madhya Pradesh until Friday morning, an IMD outlook said.

This would be followed by widespread rainfall with heavy to very heavy falls at isolated places through Friday and into Saturday morning. However, the heavy rain is seen as relenting later into Saturday and Sunday morning.

As for West Uttar Pradesh, widespread rainfall has been forecast with heavy to very heavy falls at isolated places until Friday morning.

This would escalate to fairly widespread rainfall with heavy to very heavy falls and extremely heavy falls at isolated places as system interaction peaks and the ‘low’ gets pushed back into interior Uttar Pradesh.

The fairly widespread rainfall regime with heavy to very heavy falls and isolated extremely heavy falls would continue into Sunday.

Wet until sunday

In Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi, rainfall at isolated places until Friday morning would scale up to widespread rainfall with heavy falls at isolated places on both Saturday and Sunday.

Over East Rajasthan, fairly widespread rainfall with heavy to very heavy falls at isolated places has been forecast till Friday morning before it relents to being rainfall at few places on Saturday and Sunday.

Fairly widespread rainfall with heavy falls at isolated places is the outlook for Uttarakhand, too, until Friday morning. This would escalate to widespread rainfall with heavy to very heavy falls with extremely heavy falls at isolated places on Saturday and Sunday.

Over Himachal Pradesh, rainfall at isolated places till Friday morning would accelerate to fairly widespread rainfall with heavy falls at isolated places on Saturday, and widespread rainfall with heavy falls at isolated places on Sunday.
