It is now possible for a farmer to operate his pumpset to irrigate fields with a mobile phone.

In what is termed as ‘smart irrigation’, eFresh Agribusiness Solutions has partnered with Tata Projects to launch a TQ mobile phone operated pump-starter in Sangareddy district of Telangana.

Besides curbing water wastage, this will save farmers the trouble of walking considerable distances to their fields to operate the pumps, mostly at night when power is supplied. There will also be saving of power as often farmers are lax about switching off pumpsets as power comes free on at highly subsidised rates.

Device supplied The pump can be monitored, controlled, switched on and off with the help of the mobile, said Srihari Kotela, Managing Director of eFresh.

The first such device, which has an embedded chip and has to be installed and connected to the electrical meter in the farmer’s home, was provided to a cotton farmer in Narayankhed mandal recently.

They are GSM-based mobile starters equipped with latest software technology. It will help curtail water and energy wastage as it alerts the farmer in case of faults, overload etc, through a call.

The improvement in efficiency will also lead to higher yield and productivity, Kotela said.

For the Tata Projects, it is part of its initiative to conserve water usage through innovative practices by rural farmers.
