Prices of several tea varieties declined at the Kochi auctions this week, besides witnessing low or no bids.
The auctioneers Forbes, Ewart & Figgis attribute the subdued demand from blenders and upcountry buyers as the reason for the price decline. Witnessing heavy withdrawals, the market for browner and plainer varieties in CTC dust was lower and it has also faced some difficulties in sales.
Good liquoring teas barely remained steady and tended to ease. Others were lower by ₹3 to ₹7. In sale no 25, the quantity on offer in CTC grades was 11,17,000 kg. Exporters made selective buys and operated in the region of ₹65 to ₹80.
Despite good arrivals at 11,500 kg, the market for orthodox dust barely remained steady and tended to ease. Exporters and upcountry buyers continued to be the mainstay.
In the Cochin CTC dust quotation, good varieties fetched ₹106-142, mediums quoted ₹76-122 and plain grades stood at ₹65-81.
Prices in the leaf category were also lower and the market for good liquoring Nilgiri brokens, and whole leaf in orthodox grades barely remained steady. The quantity on offer was 1,93,000 kg.
In the CTC leaf category, the market was lower by ₹5 to ₹10 and sometimes more. The quantity on offer here was 72,500 kg. In the dust category, Injipara SFD quoted the best price of ₹153 followed by Monica SFD/FD at ₹143.
Chamraj FOP-S (Green Tea) came to the top in leaf, quoting ₹411, followed by Chamraj FOP at ₹290.
