Prices of several tea varieties continued to witness a downtrend at the Kochi auctions this week amidst subdued demand from upcountry buyers and blenders.
The CTC dust market was irregular and lower by ₹3 to ₹5 and sometimes more. In sale no 11, the quantity on offer was 9,62,500 kg. Exporters were confined to the medium and plainer varieties. There was fair enquiry from Kerala loose tea traders, the auctioneers Forbes, Ewart & Figgis said.
However, improved arrivals in orthodox grades at 13,500 kg have not helped lift prices. The market was lower by ₹3 to ₹5 and sometimes more. Exporters were the mainstay of the orthodox dust market.
In the Cochin CTC dust quotation, good varieties fetched ₹102-138, mediums quoted ₹92-112 and plain grades stood at ₹83-95.
Leaf sale also witnessed a declining trend with the market for select best high-grown brokens and whole leaf barely remaining steady. The quantity on offer was 147,500 kg.
In CTC leaf, the quantity on offer was 77,000 kg and the market for high-priced brokens and Fannings was irregular and lower. Exporters lent fair support.
Chinnar SFD came to the top position in dust grades, with prices quoting at ₹144, followed by Waterfall SFD at ₹142. In the leaf category, Chamraj FOP-Sup (green tea) quoted the best prices of ₹352, followed by Chamraj OP at ₹281.
