Of every rupee earned by the Indian Railways in FY14, 65 paise was contributed by goods traffic, while passenger earnings contributed 25 paise. The remaining 10 paise was earned from other coaching, sundry and miscellaneous receipts.
On the expenses front, the railways spent 33 paise on wages and allowances and 17 paise on its pensioners, while its fuel bill amounted to 19 paise.
Other expense heads included three paise on stores, six paise each on dividend and depreciation reserve, four paise on lease charges, nine paise on miscellaneous items and the remaining three paise on capital fund, development fund and debt service fund.
