Customs revenue as a ratio of the gross domestic product (GDP) was stagnant at around 1.6 per cent between 2009-10 and 2013-14, a report of the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) said.
“Customs revenue as a ratio of GDP has been stagnant at an average of 1.6 per cent over the last five years,” said the report tabled in Parliament on Tuesday.
The revenue from customs as a percentage of indirect taxes rose from 34 per cent in 2009—10 to 38 per cent in 2011—12, but it declined to 34 per cent in 2013—14.
Customs revenue as a percentage of gross tax is also at the lowest level after 2011—12.
Further, it said that the percentage share of indirect taxes to GDP was slightly above 4 per cent during the last five years.
“GDP increased from Rs 64.78 lakh crore in 2009—10 to Rs 113.55 lakh crore in 2013—14 whereas indirect taxes increased Rs 2.45 lakh crore in 2009—10 to Rs 5 lakh crore in 2013—14,” it added.
