Cyprus seeks India’s help in resolving territorial dispute with Turkey

In a significant geopolitical move, Cyprus has sought India’s help in their reunification efforts as it enjoys friendly ties with Turkey that has proved to be a stumbling block in the process.

“During our meeting today I also had the opportunity to brief Prime Minister Modi on the latest developments in the negotiations for a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus problem, outlining the challenges we face and the stumbling blocks that inhibit further progress. I underlined our unwavering commitment to unify our country and its people in functional, viable federation in line with UN Security Council resolutions and EU law, values and principles,” Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades said here on Friday post his bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Interestingly, this remark from the President of Cyprus comes at a time when the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is visiting India from April 30. Turkey does not recognise Cyprus, as a result of which the political reunification of the Mediterranean island is on hold.

“I am aware of your initiative for resolving the Cyprus issue. You have led from the front in trying to bring a new era of peace, development and security. Not just for Cyprus, but for the whole region. We wish you every success in your efforts,” said Modi.

The Cyprus dispute has been going on for decades with Turkey’s continued occupation of its northern part. Northern Cyprus is under the self-proclaimed rule of Turkey guarded by Turkish Armed Forces.

India, on the other hand, urged Cyprus to support its claim at the high seat of the UNSC in its expanded format.

“India and Cyprus share the idea of bringing about an early reform of the security council. Both of us believe that a reformed security council reflective of the world as it is and not as it was is necessary to address the range of complex challenges facing the world today. In this context, I deeply appreciate your support for India’s claim for a permanent seat in the expanded UN Security Council,” Modi said.

He also urged Cyprus to enhance business and economic ties with India and said industries and companies of both sides can create greater trade linkages.

However, President Anastasiades batted for the revival of negotiations and early conclusion of the stalled India-European Union Free Trade Agreement (FTA).

“Cyprus is a firm supporter of the enhancement of the EU-India strategic partnership and dynamic cooperation in all areas of mutual interest. In this context I express our sincere support for tangible progress in the negotiations for the conclusion of an EU-India free trade agreement,” he said.

Cyprus is the eight largest investor in India.
