The Karnataka government has credited ₹71.83 crore of diesel subsidy for fishing boats to the bank accounts of fishermen, State Fisheries Minister Pramod Madhwaraj has said.

Addressing presspersons in Udupi on Friday, he said that around 3,600 fishing boats along the Karnataka coast get the diesel subsidy.

Sales tax on diesel used by these boats is credited directly to the bank accounts of fishermen under the diesel subsidy scheme.

The Fisheries Department has submitted a bill of ₹23.63 crore to the State treasury to pay the remaining subsidy amount till the end of November.

As of now, 3451 fishing boats have been benefited by the direct benefit transfer to the bank accounts. The State government has earmarked an amount of ₹115 crore for extending diesel subsidy to fishermen along the coast.

In Karnataka, a fishing boat is eligible for diesel subsidy up to a maximum of 90,000 litres a year.

Inland fisheries policy

Madhwaraj said the State government would initiate steps to revise the inland fisheries policy in Karnataka.

In addition to this, the government has announced a grant of ₹2 crore for the establishment of an inland fisheries development centre at Bagalkot in northern Karnataka.

He said Udupi Matsya Mela (fish festival) will be jointly conducted by the Fisheries Department and the Malpe Beach Development Authority in Udupi district from March 3-5. It will have exhibitions, sales and discussions on fisheries sector, he said.
