The Government has launched a skill council exclusively for the handicrafts and carpet sector.

The council will promote skill development among artisans, craft persons and workers at grassroot level and help them adopt latest techniques and become more productive.

Launching the council here on Wednesday, Rajiv Pratap Rudy, Union Minister of State for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (I/C) & Parliamentary Affairs, had said the percentage of skilled workforce in the country is very low compared with that in China, the UK, the US, Japan and Germany.

He said Skill India is necessary for the success of ‘Make in India’, adding that the government has taken up skill development as a mission.
