The Syndicate Bank Officers’ Association (SBOA) has called for stringent measures for defaulters from the government like attaching personal properties and declaring willful defaulters as criminals to check banks’ NPAs.
“Nearly 50 per cent of the NPAs - at around Rs 1,00,000 crore – are from 30 to 40 big Corporate houses, and they are patronized by the Government mainly by their inaction,” D S Punja, General Secretary, SBOA said.
The Association, which is holding its 7{+t}{+h} triennial meet in Pune over the weekend will push for declaration of the list of defaulters at the meet, he said.
Amongst the measures suggested to rein in defaulters are attachments of their personal property, declaring those who default willfully as criminals and debarring them from holding positions in public office.
“The government needs to overhaul banking laws making it easier for lenders to recover dues,” Panja said.
The three-day meet beginning on Feb 22 will also discuss the issue of de-linking salary with the Bank’s performance.
