In a country like India, how do we shift the focus of youngsters from chasing employment to creating jobs?

“This effort should begin right from the pre-school days in children where teachers can drive kids to become future entrepreneurs,” said Patricia G Greene, Director of Women’s Bureau, US Department of Labour, at a panel discussion on developing an entrepreneurial ecosystem.

According to her, entrepreneurship is the ability to identify opportunities and create value in them.

To address capital needs, she said one should not expect free government money to try out one’s ideas.

Ravi Kailas, Chairman, Mytrah Energy, said the ecosystem has a huge impact on creating different types of entrepreneurs.

Post liberalisation, especially in the last five to 10 years, several positive conditions have emerged. Innovative ideas and ventures will always bring in funds, he added.

Amit Ranbir Chandra, MD and India Head, Bain Capital, pointed out the need for domestic capital to address the requirements of entrepreneurs and one should not have “massive” expectations from the government.

Ramesh Abhishek, Secretary, Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion, moderated the panel discussion.
