The Minister of Finance and Information & Broadcasting Arun Jaitley said that the next few months will see a significant growth and connectivity in terms of the community radio sector. He said that about 191 community radio stations are operational currently and additionally over 400 community radio stations have been given permission. Addressing the National Community Radio Sammelan, he said the community radio statio1ns have a critical role to play in a diverse country such as India where dialects, weather, crop patterns change in every district.
He said community radio stations can become a powerful tool for spreading education and information on healthcare, agricultural techniques, weather forecasts among others, adding that sky is the limit in terms of expanding the width of programming on the medium.
Jaitley added, “Instead of having propaganda of different types which indoctrinates people, if you have sustained campaigns of this kind, which will drill into the human mind the healthcare, preventive health care system, radio can become a very powerful tool of education.”
