Rail traffic between Ahmedabad and Mumbai was disrupted on Saturday as a portion of road over bridge (ROB) fell on the tracks connecting Ahmedabad junction with southern region.

On Saturday morning a section of ROB fell on the tracks between Maninagar station and Ahmedabad Junction thereby disrupting about 31 passenger trains leaving from Ahmedabad towards Mumbai, an official statement said here.

"Several trains were cancelled and routes of some trains have been changed as section connecting Ahmedabad junction with Mumbai line got disconnected due to debris. Railway administration has deployed machinery to clear the tracks and we expect to clear the tracks by 9 pm," said Pradip Sharma, PRO, Western Railway.

According to official sources railway traffic towards Mumbai and beyond destinations was hampered as most parts of the broken bridge fell on the main track connecting the two biggest cities in the western region.

“There has been no casualty. One person identified as Suresh and hailing from Uttar Pradesh has been injured. The bridge was over 50 years old and situated over Ahmedabad-Mumbai railway tracks,” said a railway official.

Ahmedabad Municipal Commissioner D Thara and other top officials of the civic body rushed to the site. Though part of the bridge was collapsed and remaining part seems to be safe, it has been closed for traffic till the safety certificate would come from the railway authority, said Thara.

According to her, maintenance of the bridge was the responsibility of railway authority and two more such bridges are situated at Asarva and Kalupur railway station.

In order to facilitate Mumbai-bound passengers the railway authority has decided to short terminate some of the trains including Shatabdi Express coming from Mumbai was short terminated at Nadiad, around 55 km from Ahmedabad and originated for the up journey from there itself.
