Konkan Railway Corporation Ltd (KRCL) is planning to build 11 new stations and eight loop lines on its network, according to Sanjay Gupta, Chairman and Managing Director of KRCL.

Speaking to presspersons on the sidelines of a meeting with members of Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) in Mangaluru on Saturday, he said the Corporation has sent a proposal to the Railway Ministry in this regard, and it is in the process of sanction.

Stating that the construction of new stations was not a new plan, he said KRCL had identified 20 stations during the time of construction of the line itself.

The land was also acquired during the construction of the railway line.

But the stations were not constructed as there was not enough traffic.

Increased capacity He said the construction of these new stations and loop lines will give KRCL capacity to move more traffic on the route.

The longest distance between two stations in the Konkan Railway network is 19 km – the stretch is between Gokarna and Kumta stations. An average inter-station distance of 8-10 km would be ideal, he said.

Average distance After the construction of all 20 stations, the average inter-station distance in KRCL network will come down to 11 km, he said.

When asked about the likely locations of the new stations, Gupta said all the stations would be equally distributed along its network.
