Mangaluru International Airport, one of the 16 international airports managed by Airports Authority of India (AAI), has taken up several infrastructure development projects to boost passenger growth.
The projects include installation of additional aerobridges, and the development of an additional parallel taxiway and flight parking bays. The airport will also get a primary radar facility in the coming months.
Another taxiway Addressing presspersons on the sidelines of a programme in Mangaluru on Thursday, JT Radhakrishna, Director, Mangaluru International Airport, said that the airport would get a 700-metre-long additional part-parallel taxiway by March 2016. The project cost of the taxiway is estimated at ₹40 crore. The parallel taxiway will bring down the turnaround time for flights by 10 minutes, he said.
The airport, which has two aerobridges, will get two more at an estimated cost of ₹10 crore by June next year.
Parking bays In addition to this, the AAI has called for tenders for the development of additional flight parking bays at the airport. The airport, which has six flight parking bays, will get three more by June next year. The estimated cost of the project is ₹5 crore.
He said the AAI has sanctioned a primary radar facility for the airport in Mangaluru. This facility will help operate flights from and to Mangaluru even during the bad weather condition. This project, which is estimated to cost around ₹25 crore, involves the construction of a building and installation of the primary radar facility.
To a query on the other infrastructure development works at the airport, he said the construction of the exit road from the airport to the city is in progress. He hoped that the work on the road will be completed by January.
Passenger traffic Radhakrishna said that the airport has seen around 20 per cent growth in passenger traffic during April-September period of 2015. The airport, which handled 13 lakh passengers in 2014-15, is likely to handle 15 lakh passengers during 2015-16, he added.
