Commuters across the country can soon go cashless at all toll plazas using their MobiKwik wallet.

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has roped in the mobile wallet company to digitise payments at 391 toll plazas. This is expected to avoid traffic congestion to a large extent on highways, following the cash crunch arising from the government’s demonetisation move of November 8.

“We appreciate NHAI’s support in making wallet payments ubiquitous in India,” said MobiKwik co-founder Bipin Preet Singh.

To ensure smooth traffic flow and mitigate currency hardships, the Centre has extended the date for toll exemption on national highways till the midnight of December 2.

It has also said that the scrapped ₹500 notes will be accepted at toll plazas on national highways from December 2 midnight to December 15.

The Centre had earlier kept toll collection in abeyance till November 11 midnight, which was later extended to November 14, then November 18, then to November 24 and the latest till December 2 midnight.
