The rolling stock for the third line of Mumbai Metro would be ordered in the current year and it would be delivered by 2019. The project is on schedule and is expected to be completed by 2020, said Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) Managing Director, Ashwini Bhide, on Tuesday.

She was addressing the media after inaugurating the first casting yard, that will make concrete rings for lining the Metro tunnels. The digging of the tunnels with Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) and placing concrete rings for lining the tunnels happen sequentially.

The 33.5 km third line is expected to cost upwards of ₹20,000 crore, connecting Colaba in South Mumbai with Bandra and SEEPZ area in suburban Mumbai.

The line will have 27 stations out of which 26 will be underground and one would be on the ground. Since almost all the sections of the line are underground, about 40,000 concrete rings will be required for reinforcing the roof of the tunnel.

Bhide said that the line is divided into seven sections or packages, for which six casting yards would be required. First yard has been inaugurated and simultaneously, work on the other five will also start, she said.
