Indian Railways aims to save Rs 41,000 crore on energy consumption expenses by switching over to use of solar energy over next ten years.
The Ministry of Railways has prepared 'Mission 41K’ to save electricity consumption charges, according to Suresh Prabhu, Minister for Railways, Government of India.
He was speaking after formally inaugurating new facilities at the Hi-Tech City railway station here on Saturday.
Efforts were also on to mop-up Rs 17,000 crore through non-fare revenue modes, he said, adding that the costs will be cut while additional revenue will be generated.
Elaborating further, Prabhu said about Rs 4,000 crore was already saved on electricity consumption charges so far. The target of saving Rs 41,000 crore would be met by generating 1,000 MW of solar power in the next five years.
"We have already started production of 26 MW in wind energy. We are also working on converting waste to energy and commissioned two such projects,” the Minister said.
Investment plans to the tune of Rs 8.5 lakh crore were also being drawn up, he said, adding that there was no financial problem for railways and completely bankable projects are available.
