The Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu on Tuesday announced the expansion of e-catering to more railway stations, an accounting reforms pilot project at the Railway Coach Factory Kapurthala, and a freight policy move that will help garner an extra five-six million tonnes of cargo, including three million tonne of cement.
On the freight front, the Railways hopes to get additional six million tonnes of cement and fertiliser cargo next year after it has started allowing two point and mini-rake loading by using covered wagons. At present, Railways allows only full rake loading. The Railways has also decided to adopt measures to help the cement and fertiliser sectors despatch lower parcel size of goods to smaller markets.
Empanelled vendorsAdditionally, the Railways hasdecided to launch e-catering services across 408 higher category railway stations that see more footfalls. From the lot, to start with, about 169 odd railway stations will have will have e-catering services from now on. While there are 70-80 vendors empanelled across India, vendors registered in each station range from two-five, said an Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) official.
