IndiGo, Jet Airways and Zoom Air are participating in the second round of the Centre’s Regional air Connectivity Scheme (RCS), a senior official of the Ministry of Civil Aviation said on Wednesday.

With this, the number of scheduled airlines participating in RCS reaches six. There are 10 scheduled airlines operating in the domestic market. A scheduled airline is one which operates flights as per a time table approved by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, the domestic aviation watchdog.

Vistara, AirAsia India and GoAir are the only scheduled airlines which have not yet shown an interest in participating in RCS, which seeks to take flying to smaller cities in the interiors of the country. Trujet has also started operations under RCS.

Meanwhile, in the second round of bidding for permission to operate flights under RCS, at least 25 routes have emerged where airlines are prepared to operate without seeking any viability gap funding (VGF) from the government for their operations. A majority of such proposals have been received from IndiGo and SpiceJet, the official said without getting into details of the routes which these airlines want to operate on.

To get airlines interested in operating flights to the smaller cities, the Centre is offering VGF if the operators put in such flights and are willing to price at least 50 per cent of the seats on these flights at a fare of under ₹2,500 for one hour of flying.
