Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd will execute electrification work of Villupuram-Cuddalore port-Mayiladuturai-Thanjavur, and Mayiladuturai-Thiruvarur (228 km) section at an estimated cost is ₹218.41 crore, says a press release from Southern Railway.
The Villupuram-Thanjavur railway line electrification in the Southern Railway was one of the major projects announced in the 2017-18 Union Budget.
Electrification of the section will provide an alternative route to the Chennai-Tiruchchirappalli section via Villupuram-Mayiladuturai-Thanjavur and connect the ports of Cuddalore and Karaikal on electric traction.
On completion, energy-efficient and eco-friendly Mainline Electric Multiple Units can be operated in these sections.
This will reduce commuting time for rail-users, especially students in the delta region.
Pilgrims visiting places in and around Chidambaram, Mayiladuthurai, Kumbakonam and Thanjavur will also benefit through improved connectivity, the release said.
