After the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP) streamlined and installed processes, patent and trademark filing has risen sharply. In FY16, there was a jump of almost 35 per cent in trademark filings; in FY18, there is almost a 6 per cent jump, said Rajiv Aggarwal, Joint Secretary, DIPP.

Speaking at the MIPCON 2017’s ‘Managing Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) for fuelling Business Competence’, Aggarwal said, this year, the rise in filings for patents is about 5 per cent. Since last year, the department has received applications for patents form 377 start-ups, out of which 19 patents have been granted in less than a year, the fastest taking just 113 days.

Speaking on trademarks, he said that the department used to take almost 13 to 18 months to examine an application. However, today, the process is the fastest in the world, taking only 20 days.

Earlier, only 7 per cent of applications used to be accepted at first go, but today this number has risen to almost 45 per cent.
