The limestone mining lease granted by the Andhra Pradesh Government to Saraswathi Power and Industries (P) Limited for setting up a cement unit has been declared as lapsed by the State Industries and Commerce Department.
The Hyderabad-based company had planned a ₹3,257-crore integrated clinker and cement plant and a power project. Saraswathi Power was granted the lease in 2009 during the YS Rajasekhara Reddy regime.
Clearances required The mining lease covers 613.4 hectares in several mandals, mainly in Tangeda, Vemavaram and Chennayapalem villages of Guntur district. These were granted by the State for a period of 30 years, requiring the promoters of Saraswathi Power to provide necessary clearances from AP Pollution Control Board and environmental clearance from the Government of India under Environment Impact Assessment procedures, as required in the Mineral Concession Rules.
Since the company failed to fulfil these and also in taking up the project, a Government Order was issued declaring the lease as lapsed.
The Director of Mines and Geology, Hyderabad, had requested the Government to declare the mining lease as lapsed since there had been no progress.
As the company failed to furnish necessary certifications and provide the status of the project, the State Government directed the Mines and Geology Department to cancel permissions granted to the company for setting up of the cement unit.
