Minister of External Affairs Gen VK Singh said the government was ready to help those who had migrated abroad through the unofficial route.

Addressing Pravasi Bharatiya Divas wrap up conference, Gen Singh said that the Ministry has come out with a large database on emigrants. But that did not include people who had migrated through unofficial routes.

“They don’t come to us when everything is okay for them,” he said adding that officials were being sent to engage with such people to resolve their problems.

He said the 14th edition of Pravasi Bharatiya Divas was the most successful and largely attended event since its inception in 2003.

The event saw more than 7,200 delegates registering, which included 2,000 overseas participants.

Pravasi Bharatiya Divas meet concluded with discussions on exhaustive and substantive issues which went beyond cultural issues and economic engagement, said Dnyaneshwar Mulay, Secretary – OIA & CPV, Ministry of External Affairs.

Gen Singh said that recommendations and problems identified during a dialogue with Pravasis and Indian experts at the Pravasi Bharatia Divas held in 2015 were put forth before the delegates during various sessions inviting their suggestions.

“These issues will be formulated into executable points and action will be initiated on them.”
